Tree Removal in Ringwood — What Local Property Owners Need to Know

Ringwood is one of Melbourne's eastern hub suburbs, sitting in the City of Maroondah with a distinctive mix of established residential streets, commercial precincts around the Eastland and Ringwood Station area, and steep pockets rising toward the foothills. Mature eucalypts on residential blocks are common, and Maroondah's tree protection framework applies across much of the suburb — meaning most non-trivial tree work in Ringwood involves a permit conversation.

Maroondah City Council
Tree Regulations

Clause 52.37 (Canopy Trees) has applied across every Victorian planning scheme since 15 September 2025 (Amendment VC289). A canopy tree is one meeting all three thresholds: over 5 metres tall, a trunk circumference over 0.5 metres measured 1.4 metres above ground, and a canopy at least 4 metres across. On a property that already has a dwelling and no development proposed, a permit is required for a boundary canopy tree — one whose trunk sits within 6 metres of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 metres of the rear boundary. On a vacant lot, or where a development application is in play, a permit is required for any canopy tree. Dead trees, trees posing an immediate safety risk, declared weeds, and maintenance pruning under a third of the foliage are generally exempt.

Ringwood is under Maroondah City Council. Alongside Clause 52.37, the Maroondah Planning Scheme requires a planning permit to remove a tree within a Significant Landscape Overlay area, native vegetation within a Vegetation Protection Overlay area, or native vegetation on a property larger than 4,000 square metres. Exemptions include clearing named in a fire-hazard notice, minimum clearance of electricity lines, and pruning for regeneration or ornamental shaping under an SLO. Overlay coverage is parcel-specific, so we confirm the planning position for your address before quoting, and prepare supporting reports in-house to AS 4970:2025 and AS 4373-2007. Planning controls verified September 2026.

Tree Species Common in Ringwood

Every Ringwood property has its own tree mix. Here are the species we work on most across the suburb — knowing the species matters because pruning, permit thresholds, and risk profiles all differ by tree.

Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis)

Signature Ringwood canopy tree — mature specimens on residential blocks are frequently overlay protected, and often meet the Clause 52.37 canopy thresholds.

Yellow Stringybark (Eucalyptus muelleriana)

Indigenous to the Ringwood foothills. Fibrous bark, tall, requires elevated work platform for canopy work.

Peppermint Gum (Eucalyptus radiata)

Common eastern-suburbs eucalypt — aromatic foliage, generally lower-risk than Manna Gum but still benefits from periodic assessment.

Silver Wattle (Acacia dealbata)

Fast-growing indigenous tree. Short lifespan (~30 years) — often needs planned replacement.

Liquidambar (Liquidambar styraciflua)

Widely planted in mid-century Ringwood gardens for autumn colour. Vigorous roots — watch for paving lift and drain intrusion.

Tree Care FAQs — Ringwood

Answers to questions Ringwood property owners ask most often.

Does Maroondah require a permit to remove trees in Ringwood?

Almost always, for canopy trees meeting the trigger dimensions in SLO or VPO zones. Non-overlay-protected trees over a certain size may also need a permit depending on species. Send us your address and we'll check the Maroondah Planning Scheme overlays before quoting.

Can you handle a boundary tree dispute with a neighbour?

Yes. Our AQF Level 5 arborists provide neutral assessments that both parties can rely on. We document tree health, ownership, encroachment, and safe options for pruning or removal — the report supports informed conversation rather than escalation.

Do you attend property inspections for buyers or agents?

Yes. Pre-purchase arborist inspections are common in Ringwood given the mature canopy stock. We inspect major trees for risk, assess overlay-protected specimens, and provide a written summary so buyers know what they're inheriting.
