Tree Species Common in Blackburn
Every Blackburn property has its own tree mix. Here are the species we work on most across the suburb — knowing the species matters because pruning technique, permit thresholds, and risk profiles all differ by tree.
Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis)
Signature Blackburn canopy tree, especially on blocks bordering Blackburn Lake. Frequently VPO-protected — assessment mandatory before any work.
Messmate Stringybark (Eucalyptus obliqua)
Indigenous canopy tree on older Blackburn blocks near the reserves. Tall, fibrous bark, requires elevated work platform for canopy work.
Yellow Box (Eucalyptus melliodora)
Common on older residential blocks. Structural assessment recommended given proximity to dwellings on typical Blackburn lots.
Silver Wattle (Acacia dealbata)
Indigenous to the area. Fast-growing but relatively short-lived (~30 years) — often needs staged planned replacement.
English Oak (Quercus robur)
Mature exotic on older streets. Long-lived but accumulates deadwood; 3-5 year deadwood cycle keeps them safe.
