Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Vermont South?
Often, yes. Under Clause 52.37 a permit is required for a boundary canopy tree — one over 5 metres tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 metres (measured 1.4 metres above ground) and a canopy at least 4 metres wide, whose trunk sits within 6 metres of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 metres of the rear boundary. Canopy trees elsewhere on a lot that already has a dwelling generally do not need one, unless development is proposed. Dead trees and trees posing an immediate safety risk are exempt. Some Vermont South properties also sit under an overlay schedule with stricter rules, so we check the planning position for your address before quoting.
