Tree Species Common in Box Hill
Every Box Hill property has its own tree mix. Here are the species we work on most across the suburb — knowing the species matters because pruning technique, permit thresholds, and risk profiles all differ by tree.
English Oak (Quercus robur)
Widely planted along the older Box Hill streets. Long-lived (200+ years) but accumulates deadwood in the upper canopy — regular deadwood cycle recommended.
London Plane (Platanus x acerifolia)
Common street tree through Box Hill's mid-century subdivisions. Drops large limbs in high winds if not proactively pruned.
Yellow Box (Eucalyptus melliodora)
Remnant native on older residential blocks. Widow-maker limb-drop risk — proactive AQF Level 5 inspection matters.
Silver Birch (Betula pendula)
Popular in Box Hill front gardens from the 1960s-70s. Susceptible to borer as trees age; canopy dieback is the early warning sign.
Camphor Laurel (Cinnamomum camphora)
Older feature tree on some Box Hill blocks. Vigorous root system, allergenic to some — often subject to owner-requested removal.
